Catron County, NM Price ReductionBack to Home PageClick for Photo Page.
LOCATION:
Hay Vega is located in western New Mexico near the Arizona state line in Catron County approximately 200 miles southwest of Albuquerque or 250 miles northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The property lies 20 miles south of Highway 60 approximately 30 minutes from Springerville, Arizona or 45 minutes from Quemado, New Mexico. The boundary of the property lies 200 yards south of Forest Road 205.
LAND TENURE:
474 +/- deeded acres.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION AND GEOGRAPHY:
The Hay Vega is an irregular shape encompassing most of a mountain valley surrounded by mountains and high ridges. Elevation is from 8300 to 8600 feet. The northern end of the property is open meadow and the balance of the property is covered in old growth ponderosa pine with some aspen, oak and fir at the higher elevations. The terrain generally slopes to the north and there is a two track road that traverses the property from north to south. The majority of the property that cannot be accessed by road can be traversed by ATV. Annual precipitation ranges from 10 to 12 inches with the majority coming in July and August during the monsoon season. Winter snowfall can be deep enough to limit vehicular access, but that has not been typical during the drought.
WATER:
There is one well on the property which was drilled in 1989 but never developed by the owner. The well is 400 feet deep and was tested at 3-5 gallons per minute. The well is located in the canyon at the south end of the property, so it would be feasible to gravity feed water to almost any location on the property. There was a spring on the property that provided water for livestock for the last 100 years, but recently went dry due to the drought. It is expected that this spring will resume running when recharged with ample snowfall.
UTILITIES:
Western New Mexico phone service is a short distance from the property. Electricity at the nearest location is 5-6 miles away.
WILDLIFE:
This property is located in New Mexico Game and Fish Hunting Unit 15, which is known for large bull elk in the 400 + point range. There is sign of elk on the property as well as black bear, deer, antelope, javelina, and wild turkey. The owner received several landowner permits for elk in the past, but received only one for this year. Antelope permits have not been applied for.
TAXES:
$20.00 +/- annually
GRAZING LEASE:
The property is currently leased for livestock grazing to the holder of the grazing rights on the Forest Permit. This is an annual grazing lease renewable on January 1 of each year.
COMMENTS:
This is one of the few remaining pristine tracts of land left in western New Mexico. Because it is completely surrounded by National Forest, the view from this property will never be changed by any surrounding development, yet it would lend itself to high end development because any home could be situated so as not to be seen by a neighbor. The land has been in the same family since 1910 and was last logged in the 1920`s, so approximately 75-80% of the property has undisturbed tree cover. Hay Vega has wildlife, serenity, views, and privacy provided by a pristine mountain retreat.
